Terms, refunds and privacy.
Plain language, no clause designed to be skipped. This page covers every product sold here: the digital kits and the COLDSTART ANCHOR hardware line, which is built to order in Ontario by a registered business. Where the law gives you a right this page has not described, that right stands — what is written here is a floor, not a ceiling.
Who you are buying from
| Supplier | Turner Software, a registered business in Ontario, Canada |
|---|---|
| Business address | 590 Halberstadt Circle, Cambridge, Ontario |
| Telephone | +1 519-589-1866 |
| admin@turnersoft.ca — answered within one business day | |
| HST registration | Not registered for HST — no HST is charged on any order |
| Products | Digital downloads (the Winter Grid-Down Playbook, the Preparedness Calculator Pack, the Family Preparedness Audit and the Complete Kit), and the COLDSTART ANCHOR hardware line: Core Kit, Shielded Case and Institutional. |
COLDSTART ANCHOR is a product line of Turner Software. Naming the business is deliberate: an anonymous storefront asking for $519 upfront is a harder thing to trust than a named Ontario business with a phone number, and you should be able to check who is holding your money before you send it.
Digital products: delivery, refunds and licence
Digital products are delivered by download as soon as payment completes. There is no account to create, no subscription, no expiry and no activation — the files are yours.
If a download is broken, is not what the page described, or you bought the wrong one, email us and we will fix it or refund it. We do not ask you to prove you never opened the file. If you bought the same thing twice by accident, tell us and the duplicate is refunded.
Licence. Digital products, the shipped archive, the printed binder and the rebuild scripts are licensed for personal use. You may read them, print them, carry them, copy them to your own devices, and use them in your own household as many times as you like. You may not resell them, redistribute them, publish them, bundle them into a product of your own, or offer them as part of a paid service without written permission. Where a file contains its own licence — the openly licensed content described below — that licence governs that content and is more permissive than this paragraph, not less; it is there so you know what you are allowed to do with it.
Delivered content is not encrypted, not time-limited, and not tied to a machine. That is a deliberate choice: you should be able to read what you paid for in twenty years without asking us, and without us.
Hardware orders: cancellation, returns and refunds
Hardware is built to order and paid for upfront as a prepayment. The full terms, including the required disclosures under Ontario’s Consumer Protection Act, 2002, are on the pre-order page. In summary:
- Within 7 days of receiving the agreement you may cancel for any reason and receive a full refund. No explanation required. We process it within 15 days.
- After 7 days, once parts have been ordered for your kit, cancellation is at our discretion and may be subject to the cost of the parts already purchased for your order.
- If we deliver more than 30 days after the promised date, you may cancel and receive a full refund at any time.
- Defective on arrival? We replace it or refund it, whichever you prefer.
- Refunds are issued to the original payment method.
Delivery
- Digital products: immediately, by download link, on payment.
- COLDSTART ANCHOR hardware: shipped within 21 days of payment, with tracking. We build in 16 days and quote 21. Shipping is included within Canada; international orders are quoted, and payable, before anything is charged. Duty and brokerage on an international order are payable by the customer and are not known to us in advance.
- Batteries are not included with any hardware kit. You supply your own power bank and computer, which keeps the shipping rules and the warranty sane.
Warranty
Hardware: 12 months against defects in materials and workmanship on the physical media, the printed materials and the enclosure. Contact us and we repair or replace it. This is in addition to whatever the law already gives you.
Digital products, software and shipped content: provided as-is, without warranty. We cannot warrant that a third-party document, map or reference is complete, current or correct for your situation — books written by other people are not ours to warrant. What we do warrant is that the archive is what the manifest says it is: the file list and checksums on the media are the verification, and you can check every file yourself without our software or our permission.
What is on the media, and under what licence
We do not sell you content. Everything shipped is public-domain or openly licensed, and the attribution and licence texts travel on the media rather than living only on this website — because a licence note that requires an internet connection to read is not a licence note.
| Content | Licence | What we do with it |
|---|---|---|
| Wikipedia article text | CC BY-SA 4.0 | Attribution, the licence text and a link to the licence are included on the media. The Wikipedia content is not our work and is not endorsed by the Wikimedia Foundation. |
| Wikipedia images | Each image carries its own licence, and some are non-free | The shipped Wikipedia layer is the image-free build. Article text is uniformly CC BY-SA 4.0; images are not, so rather than audit tens of thousands of individual image licences we ship the build without them and say so. |
| Kiwix | GPLv3 | Shipped verbatim, unmodified. GPLv3 requires us to provide installation information for the software, and that information is provided on the media. |
| Project Gutenberg texts | Public domain text | Sourced without the Project Gutenberg boilerplate, so the standard Project Gutenberg header and footer you would see on their site does not appear on the media and the Project Gutenberg name is not attached to what we ship. |
| FEMA manuals | Public domain (17 U.S.C. §105) | Shipped unmodified, with FEMA credited as the originator. Nothing on this site implies that FEMA, or any other agency, has approved, certified or endorsed this product or has any connection to it. |
| US Army field manuals | Public domain (17 U.S.C. §105) | Shipped unmodified, with the originating agency credited. Same disclaimer: no approval, certification or endorsement is claimed or implied. |
| Language model weights | Apache-2.0 | Shipped under the model’s own licence, which permits commercial distribution. The licence file travels on the media. |
| Our own work — documentation, rebuild scripts, printed binder, site text | © Turner Software, personal use | Yours to use and rebuild with. Not for resale or redistribution. |
Two questions in this area we are paying for written advice on, and will re-publish this page when the answers land: whether our assembled library is a “collection” under CC BY-SA (only the Wikipedia content carries that licence) or “adapted material” (in which case the whole work does), and whether our launcher is mere aggregation beside Kiwix or a derivative work of it. Until that advice is in hand we ship the software verbatim and the Wikipedia layer without images, which is the conservative position in both cases.

What we collect. Your name, email address, shipping address and what you ordered — the minimum needed to build, ship and support what you bought. Order records are kept as long as we are required to keep them for tax purposes and for as long as the warranty could apply.
What we do with it. Fulfil your order, answer your email, honour the warranty, and meet our tax obligations. That is the whole list. We do not sell, rent, trade or share your details with anyone except the carrier delivering your order and the payment processor handling your payment. We do not add you to a mailing list you did not ask for.
Card details. Payment is processed by a third-party card processor on their own checkout. Your card number is entered there and is not received, transmitted or stored by us at all.
The product itself. COLDSTART ANCHOR has no account, no login, no activation, no telemetry, no phone-home and no expiry date. The device does not report anything to us and does not require an internet connection to work. There is nothing on it that stops working because we stopped working.
Cookies, analytics and advertising. The COLDSTART ANCHOR pages on this site (/coldstart/ and /coldstart/preorder/) load no third-party tracking of any kind, for the same reason the product does not: those pages should not behave differently from what they sell.
The digital product pages (/preparedness/ and its sub-pages) load the Meta Pixel so we can tell which advertisement produced a sale. It sets a cookie, and Meta receives the page you viewed and the fact that you started a checkout, along with your IP address and browser details, under Meta's own privacy terms. We use it to measure and improve our advertising; we do not use it to build a profile of you for anyone else's benefit, and we do not sell or share what it returns with any other party. It is not present on the COLDSTART ANCHOR pages, and it is not loaded anywhere on this site after you leave those digital pages. If you would rather not be measured, an ad or tracking blocker on your browser does not prevent you from buying anything here — the checkout is a normal payment form and does not depend on it.
Campaign links. Our advertisements and posts add short parameters to the end of the address (for example ?utm_source=…) so an order can be traced back to the channel that earned it. Those parameters contain no information about you — only which campaign a click came from — and they ride into the payment record with the order.
Your records. Email admin@turnersoft.ca to ask what we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted — subject to the order records we are obliged to keep for tax and warranty purposes.
Competitor information on this site
Where this site names a competitor, gives a price, it is drawn from publicly published material, is stated as publicly available information, and is not an allegation about anyone. We do not have their internal cost data and do not claim to. Prices are as observed in September 2026 and are converted to Canadian dollars where they were quoted in US dollars. If a row is wrong, or out of date, email us and we will correct or remove it — that offer is genuine and we have acted on it before.
Not a medical device, and not a promise
Not a medical device — cited references only. No product can guarantee survival during an electromagnetic pulse or any other emergency; we publish measured performance. Shipped content is public-domain or openly licensed; attribution and licence texts are included on the media.
To that, in plainer terms. The assistant cites the source it is answering from and refuses to answer a dosing, chemical or temperature question without a quoted reference; it does not diagnose, prescribe or dose, and it is not a substitute for a doctor, a nurse or a veterinarian. The archived medical references are other people’s published work, reproduced because they are public-domain or openly licensed and because a citation beats a confident guess. Every attenuation figure we publish is a bench measurement of the specific unit, with the band and the method named; the enclosure has not been measured yet, so those figures currently read “pending bench test” rather than being estimated. Where we do not have a measurement, we publish the absence of one.
Changes to these terms
These terms apply to orders placed while this page is published. When a batch closes, prices, parts and delivery times are re-quoted and this page is updated with the new figures. The terms that apply to your order are the ones you received in writing with your order agreement, and we do not change them afterwards to your disadvantage.
Questions, corrections, or a problem with an order: admin@turnersoft.ca — one business day, and a person answers. If something has gone wrong with an order, write to us before you escalate it anywhere: we would rather fix it, and on a wave of 100 units we usually can.
